ENDANGERED SPECIES

I walk fast, my gait suggests trepidation.
I am nervous, beads of sweat on my forehead.
My eyes quickly dart from left to right.
I am trying to judge whether they are following me.

Once they catch up, there is no escaping. Hope departs when they make an entry. They will eventually come, there is no fooling them.
They feed on darkness and are the masters of treachery.

There were many like me, trying to run, trying to hide.
But our case was hopeless, disappointing from the very beginning.
Initially we were brave and would fight.
But as our numbers fell, the only recluse was to hide.

There is no one now, I am the lone survivor.
I fear that with me gone, our legacy will end.
I am helpless, there is no support.
These are deceitful treacherous times.

When they come all happiness evades us. Optimism becomes alien, goodness disappears.
They corrupt us, our minds with the greed of power.
We become our own enemies.

They know us better than we do ourselves.
They corrupt us with our deepest, most desperate desires.
They promise to fulfill that which must not be fulfilled.
Temptation is the evil with which they overtake us.

Who are 'they' you must be wondering? But delve deeper into yourselves and you will know.
They are everywhere, all the time.
There is no escaping them, you will soon know.

They are our darker sides, our sides which we wishes to hide.
They hated this anonymity, their secretive presence.
Thus they came out in open becoming stronger with time.
Corruption, dishonesty, pure malice supported them, now they rule.

I break into a run, scared they will come for me.
But where could I run, where could I go? They were omnipresent.
I find a solitary spot attempting to hide.
I know they will soon come and get me, after all I am an extremely endangered species
