Torn asunder between desire and duty
A conflict common to all eternity
Wondering about the right thing to do
Practicing self control
For Indulgence is the devil's tool
Choices at every step in life
What is wrong what is right?
Not what I want but what I ought to do
The sense of duty, the inner moral nagging you
But what indeed is moral?
Why is the right choice mostly sad?
What is the devils tool
Is building happy moments all that bad?
Well of course it is, says your learned conscience, wise as an owl, always with an opinion
And hence we follow with sacrifice.
A common side effect, as most would agree, followed by sacrifice is self pity
Thus the process begins of a life time of regrets
Giving up small joys which ought to be had
The right thing to do at that point hardly ever matters
For their is no right or wrong action, only the intentions that precede.
But we do what we must, it sometimes leads to success
But when it ends in failure there is simply more regret
Thinking of all that you gave up on the way
Never really living
Missing all the small details, all the tiny things that matter
but we continue to do what we should
For sacrifice we have been taught is honorable
Dilemmas of conscience, hard to ignore
The "right choice" here and then some more
But what we indeed don't realize
Sacrifice is not a preordained part of life.
You can follow moral intentions without relinquishing life.
So don't always do what you must,
Indulgence instead in desires buried deep
Live just the way you want
And you'll be satisfied for ever long
